The ISE Department

Industrial and systems engineering (ISE) is concerned with designing and improving systems to make products or provide services. ISE looks at the “big picture” of what makes organizations work best. Students in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering learn and research how to design, improve, and control systems of people, materials, information, equipment, energy, and capital to increase quality, safety, and profitability. Industrial and systems engineers provide innovative solutions to the complex problems faced by virtually all enterprises operating in today’s global economy. It is no surprise, then, that the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that of the more than 18 fields of engineering in the United States, our field is among the top three employed.

If you are interested in a professional engineering career focused on the “big picture” challenges faced by manufacturing and service enterprises, the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering offers the necessary bachelor’s degree program in industrial engineering. The department also offers master’s and doctoral degrees to prepare you for advanced industrial and systems engineering practice, research, and teaching.

The ISE faculty has authored textbooks, research journal articles, and software that are used worldwide. They are experts that truly enjoy teaching and research and have a long history of graduating top caliber engineers who are highly sought after. The Department is located in McCain Hall, a prime location on the Mississippi State Drill Field. McCain’s recent $6.25 million renovation produced state-of-the-art facilities conducive for learning and research.
